Education Profile of Nagaland

Though Nagaland is one of the smallest states of India, its rate of literacy is better than any other bigger state. It has a literacy rate of rate of 80.11%, being 83.29% for males and 76.69% for females as per Census 2011 an increase from 66.59% in 2001. The official language of Nagaland is English. The schools are equipped with all the basic infrastructural facilities and teachers. Courses are offered in Commerce, Science and Commerce stream at the higher education level.

School Education in Nagaland

Children below 14 years receive compulsory education and their education is taken care by the state government. Many new schemes are introduced by the state government to give education a much deserved boost.

In May 2010, special educational and allied programs like Mahila Samakhya Scheme, Girls’ Hostel Scheme, Model Schools Scheme, Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan, and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan came under Nagaland Education Mission Society.

The main focus of the policies was to uplift education at the district level. According to the new education policy, the main focus was to uplift the districts that are educationally backward. Girl education was also encouraged with the building of hostels within the schools to encourage children from the villages to study in the cities. The Department of School Education has been directed by the Nagaland government to see into it that every school is equipped with potable and clean drinking water. Some of the most important schools of Nagaland include Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalala, Assam Rifles School and Jubilee Memorial School. 

Higher Education in Nagaland

After completing 10 2 tier of education, a student can enroll for college education. The state has 2 universities, 40 plus colleges. There are many colleges in the state offering B.A, B.Sc, B.Com courses at the graduation level. Some of the important colleges of Nagaland include Dimapur College in Dimapur, Alder College in Kohima, Fazl Ali College in Mokokchung, Bailey Baptist College in Workhas
Mount Tiyi College in Wokha, and Kilenkaba Memorial College in Dimapur.

There are several vocational courses also available in Nagaland. These are offered by polytechnic colleges like Kheloshe Polytechnic and Institute of Communication and Information Technology. City Law College, Kohima Law College and Mokakchung Law College are popular law institutes in Nagaland. Nagaland University provides courses In Linguistics, English, and History.
